Funerals

When death comes, Our Savior's Lutheran Church walks with you. We help plan the service, proclaim the resurrection, and care for your family.

Funerals

At a person’s death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn. In a funeral or memorial service we give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of ours into the hands of God. We rest in the sure hope of the resurrection.

If you have lost a loved one, please contact the church office at (507) 847-2856 or info@oursaviorsjackson.com, or call Pastor Ted Carnahan directly at (507) 832-0099. You do not need to have anything figured out before you call.

How we walk with you

Planning a funeral while grieving is hard, and you don’t have to do it alone. Pastor Ted sits down with families to plan the service together, usually alongside the funeral director, walking through each part step by step using our Funeral Planning Guide. Nothing is required of you that we won’t help with.

The shape of the service

A funeral at Our Savior’s is, first of all, a worship service. We gather to proclaim Jesus Christ crucified and risen, to remember the one who has died before God, to give thanks for their life, and to comfort one another in our grief. The service follows the church’s ancient pattern:

  • Gathering — the family and casket are met at the entrance, often draped with the funeral pall, a reminder that in baptism we are all clothed with Christ and equal before God.
  • Word — Scripture readings and hymns that proclaim the promise of the resurrection.
  • Sending — we send one another out with Christ’s blessing.
  • Committal (optional) — prayers at the grave or place of rest, immediately following the service or at a later time.

A memorial service, when the body is not present, follows the same pattern. For graveside services, the funeral and committal are blended into a single order.

After the service

The Fellowship Hall is available for a gathering or luncheon after the service, and the Parlor is available beforehand for the family. The serving groups of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Women are glad to serve a meal following the service at no charge for member families. The family chooses two of three: sandwiches, salads, or bars.

Practical matters

There is no charge for the use of the church’s facilities for a funeral. Honoraria for the organist and A/V operator are customary and usually handled through the funeral home. The full details are in our published OSLC Funeral Policy and OSLC Facility Policy.

When the time comes, call the office at (507) 847-2856 or email info@oursaviorsjackson.com. We will take it from there, one step at a time.
